I had in mind, for several years, to make an animation of a butterfly or moth trapped against a window. I was thinking about moments when the natural world is obstructed by the world of man. It eventually came into fruition during 2021 following several lockdowns that I had spent alone.

"Polar" was made as an alternative seasonal animation. The musical soundtrack is my own composition.

The Thylacine, aka the “Tasmanian Tiger” or “Tasmanian Wolf,” was a large, carnivorous marsupial. It had a dog like appearance and tiger like stripes on its pelt. The Thylacine’s future was doomed following the arrival of European settlers in Tasmania. They cleared much of the land for livestock and hunted the animals extensively for bounties.
The last known thylacine died from exposure at Hobart Zoo on September 7th, 1936. It was only two months after the species had finally been given protected status. Despite many recorded sightings there has been no concrete evidence the thylacine still exists, and the species has been declared extinct since 1986. However, what does still exist is some black and white film of the last known animal, pacing back and forth, in its pen at Hobart Zoo.

“Dodo Footage” was my first venture into animation. It was created by digitally manipulating photographs of the stuffed Dodo at the Natural History Museum. That Dodo is itself, a plaster and chicken feather reconstruction made using old prints and drawings as reference. The real Dodo has been extinct since 1662. My animated version was placed in the Pelicans’ aviary at London Zoo. The soundtrack is created from recordings made at the Zoo combined with the sound of my cat’s jaws snapping shut after a particularly wide yawn.
