BEDROOM SCENES

Close
2 mins 37 secs 2022

Biro drawings from my sketchbook depicting moments of restlessness and increased anxiety during a sleepless night were the starting point for this animation. Like many people, my anxiety levels seem to increase daily with each report published about climate change and what seems like the insurmountable problems that face humanity. But the moment that made me wonder if I may never sleep again was when the unthinkable happened- the return of war and expansionism to Europe.
All the sound effects, including the foxes and thunderstorm, were recorded at my home either in the bedroom or outside the house.

ANTHROPOCENE SKETCHBOOK (V 2)

Drawing in sketchbooks is an important part of my studio practice. Sketching and painting against the background of the studio radio broadcasting the latest analysis of world events and doom-laden forecasts for the planet. Thoughts and anxieties seeped onto the paper and the whole process began to feel quite cathartic. Digitised versions of the pages formed the basis for each animated sequence. I saw these film sequences as a natural progression of the sketches. A sort of “what happened next.”

IMAGINARY DAUGHTER

Close
1 min 16 secs 2020

I had been harbouring an idea for a while that finally came into fruition during lockdown. I have often tried to visualise what it would be like to share my space with the daughter I might have had in a different life. Sitting at the kitchen table trying to paint in the same way I did with my mother on rainy days in my childhood. Whilst working on the project I found that it was impossible to imagine the little girl without reaching back to my own experiences as a child. The painting that the girl is wrestling into existence is actually a painting I made at school aged 5 years old. My own mother had kept the painting safely until her death. My name, age and date in the bottom right hand corner of the picture were written by my teacher.

ENCOUNTER WITH A CROW

Close
1 min 24 secs 2011

One sunny morning I was walking along the street to the corner shop when a crow fell out of the sky (or so it seemed) and landed on the pavement in front of me. Suddenly divergent worlds came crashing together, the avian and the human, the natural and the urban, the sky and the ground, life and death.  A small crowd gathered to look at it, some offered eyewitness reports as to what had happened.  It was quite a while before it's body moved...

LIVING WITH ST ANTHONY

Close
1 min 23 secs 1998

Attending a Catholic school as a child I enjoyed the company of the painted statues in the classrooms and corridors. Fast forward to my thirties - I find myself flying back from Barcelona with a painted, plaster, statue I rescued from a flea market. He was identified enthusiastically by the surprised man who operated the Xray machine in airport security as "St Anthony." The statue arrived safely back in my north London flat and has remained my housemate ever since.
